The day is October 18, 2011 and NTTdocomo has announced its slew of winter/spring 2011 line of cell phones.

The biggest attraction this year is the expanded range of Smartphones. A worldwide phenomenon, smartphones are also catching on in Japan recently, with iOS and Android being the major driving force.

Though the Japanese manufacturers took much longer than established heavyweights like HTC and Samsung to enter the Android smartphone business, the 2011 winter/spring lineup proves that Japanese makers can be the best in the world when pushed to the edge.

Let’s cover some of the models in detail.

AQUOS PHONE SH-01D

  • Android 2.3
  • 4.5” HD (1280 x 720) Screen
  • OMAP 4430 1.0GHz dual-core
  • 65 x 128 x 9.7mm
  • 12.1MP CMOS AF + 0.3MP CMOS
  • IPX5/IPX7 waterproofing

This is a beast of a phone, though not the highest-end SHARP smartphone this season (the title goes to AQUOS PHONE 104SH from SoftBank) but nonetheless the specs are plenty good enough to trade serious blows with established names such as HTC and Samsung. For instance the 1280 x 720 HD screen is the industry-leading resolution at the moment.

REGZA Phone T-01D

The successor to the first REGZA Phone T-01C, the T-01D enhances the specs in almost every way – including a higher, 720p screen resolution and fingerprint scanner made available from the merger of Toshiba Communications with Fujitsu Communications. The phone employs technologies from Toshiba’s REGZA line of TVs to enhance images the users see.

  • IPX5/IPX7 waterproofing
  • LTE antenna

A true superphone from Fujitsu that combines the highest-end spec currently available with cutting-edge LTE antenna that will allow up to 75Mbps downstream. And at 9.8mm thick, its just as thin as any other high-end phones out there.

MEDIAS LTE N-04D

NEC’s MEDIAS line of smartphones continue this season with the N-04D being the top tier model. Though the specs are slightly lower than the Fujitsu, SHARP and Toshiba offerings the N-04D has one huge advantage: LTE antenna capable of connecting to Xi, NTTdocomo’s brand name for its LTE (4G) network.
